As células solares sensibilizadas por corantes (DSSC) baseadas em TiO2 nanocristalino apresentam uma elevada eficiência de conversão de energia, sendo um dos substitutos mais comuns para dispositivos de conversão de energia solar de baixo custo a alta temperatura. O ZnO é outro semicondutor metal-óxido promissor que pode substituir o TiO2 devido à sua maior mobilidade eletrónica em comparação com o TiO2 e ao seu nível de energia da banda de condução ser semelhante ao do TiO2. As partículas nanocristalinas de ZnO foram preparadas pelo método sol-gel utilizando eléctrodos mesoporosos para células solares sensibilizadas por corantes. A fase anatase do ZnO foi confirmada por XRD. A microscopia eletrónica de transmissão (TEM) foi utilizada para confirmar o tamanho das partículas das nano partículas de ZnO. O revestimento das nanopartículas de ZnO com corantes naturais extraídos dos espinafres e ouro casado foi efectuado. O microscópio eletrónico de varrimento e o estudo EDX revelam a morfologia e a composição elementar das nanopartículas de ZnO puras e revestidas com corantes naturais. O gráfico de Tauc confirmou a diminuição do intervalo de banda das nanopartículas de ZnO com revestimento de corante natural. Os espectros de dispersão Raman revelam modos de fonões activos para todas as amostras sintetizadas. As nanopartículas revestidas com corante natural são consideradas melhores.
