Das Konzept der Nachhaltigkeit in der Stadt wurde als ultimatives Ziel vieler moderner Planungsbemühungen identifiziert und ist zu einem zentralen Aspekt geworden, auf dessen Grundlage die Stadtentwicklungspolitik formuliert wird. Im Rahmen dieser Konzepte wurde die Integration von Flächennutzung und Verkehr als eines der wichtigsten politischen Ziele hervorgehoben, wenn man die Wechselbeziehung zwischen ihnen und den verfügbaren Planungsinstrumenten berücksichtigt. Dementsprechend wurde eine Reihe von Grundsätzen für ihre Umsetzung festgelegt. Es fehlt jedoch ein Bewertungsrahmen, um das Ausmaß der Umsetzung dieser Grundsätze zu messen. Um diese Lücke zu schließen, zielt diese Studie darauf ab, die Reisecharakteristika und die gebaute Umwelt zu untersuchen, um eine nachhaltige Verkehrsplanung in der Stadt Thrissur zu erreichen.
