Eine Möglichkeit, die Kosten für die Herstellung von Biotensiden zu senken, besteht darin, der Biomasse und dem Extrakt des produzierenden Mikroorganismus einen Mehrwert zu verleihen. Die In-vitro-Produktion von Tensiden beispielsweise ist wenig ergiebig und erfordert das Wachstum von Bacillus subtilis in synthetischen Medien unter Verwendung teurer Substrate. Während des Wachstums werden Tenside und andere Lipopeptide und Enzyme, die für die pharmazeutische Industrie, die Lebensmittelindustrie und die Ethanolproduktion wichtig sind, wie Alpha-Amylase, Lipase und Cellulase, produziert und in das Kulturmedium abgegeben. Am Ende des mikrobiellen Wachstums wird der Extrakt durch Zentrifugation von der Biomasse getrennt. Diese Biomasse, die andernfalls weggeworfen würde, ist eine Quelle von Proteinen und Lipiden, die sich für die Synthese anderer Tenside eignen und auch für die Umweltdekontaminierung eingesetzt werden können. Das Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist es, Alternativen zur Senkung der Kosten für die Tensidproduktion aufzuzeigen.
