O autor austríaco Heinrich Ritter von Levitschnigg (1810-1862) desapareceu completamente da consciência literária, apesar de ter escrito o primeiro romance policial austríaco, Der Diebsfänger (O Caçador de Ladrões). Este trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar o autor e a sua obra. A primeira parte do trabalho consiste numa visão geral da biografia e da obra de Heinrich Ritter von Levitschnigg. Para o romance Der Diebsfänger, Levitschnigg inspirou-se no popular romance em folhetim Die Geheimnisse von Paris, de Eugène Sue, como se pode constatar através de uma comparação. O romance de Levitschnigg não só faz referência ao novo género do romance em folhetim, mas também contém, como demonstra uma análise aprofundada neste trabalho, todos os elementos de um romance policial clássico. Em particular, a representação crua do submundo vienense e do subproletariado emergente após a revolução de 1848 permite ao leitor uma boa visão das condições da cidade de Viena no século XIX. Uma análise de Der Diebsfänger como retrato social e da sociedade da sua época completa o trabalho.
