--In 1923, a Russian Wonderland was published in Berlin by the young émigré Vladimir Nabokov (under his pen name Vladimir Sirin) who transformed Alice into Ania, and replanted Carrollian parodies and puns into a pre-revolutionary Russian nursery. A hundred years later, Igor Prikhozhai adopted the pen name ’Igor Sirin’ in reverence to Nabokov, his beacon and role model. Igor’s Looking-Glass translation is stylized as a sequel to Vladimir Sirin’s Ania-who, in Chapter IX, naturally becomes Queen Anna! This name reflects Queen Anne of Great Britain (who in 1707 unified the Lion and the Unicorn); one also recalls the medieval Queen Anne of France, daughter of the Kyivan Prince Yaroslav the Wise (and it was about the Kyivan princes-rather than William the Conqueror-that the Mouse spoke in its 'dry lecture' in Nabokov’s Ania.) The translator’s commentary, voluminous but unfinished, is reproduced as an Appendix to this book, both in Russian and English. There, Igor not only provides detailed and witty comments on the Looking-Glass logic but also analyses a dozen of existing Russian translations. Igor demonstrates how translators, failing to grasp the author’s logic, frequently turned Carroll’s precise wordplay into arbitrary absurdity.
