Myths and Folk-tales of the Russians, Western Slavs, and Magyars

In the hush of an Eastern European forest, a flicker of firelight reveals a circle of listeners, rapt as an elder weaves tales of heroes, spirits, and the uncanny. The boundaries between the everyday and the supernatural blur, and ancient voices echo with a power that has shaped generations. Drawing from the heart of Slavic folk tales, Russian fairy tales, Magyar myths, and the rich tapestry of Western Slav legends, this collection gathers stories that pulse with the rhythms of village life, the mysteries of the wild, and the enduring struggle between darkness and light. Each narrative captures the raw beauty and peril of a world where cunning, courage, and fate entwine, offering readers a vivid glimpse into the beliefs and dreams that have defined Eastern European folklore across centuries. What sets these traditional Russian stories and Magyar folklore apart is their unvarnished authenticity-tales told not for polite society, but for those who understood the hardships and hopes of rural life. The collection is alive with trickster spirits, enchanted forests, and the ever-present tension between the human and the otherworldly. These are not mere fairy tales, but cultural folklore tales that reflect the fears, aspirations, and wisdom of their people, rendered in language that is both direct and evocative. The stories invite readers to explore the deep roots of Slavic mythology and European mythological stories, where every encounter is charged with meaning and every outcome is hard-won.This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions.
