My Personal Memories of Haile Fida is an intimate political memoir of friendship, revolution, sacrifice, and remembrance. Amare Tegbaru Beyene draws upon his close personal and political relationship with Haile Fida to portray a man frequently remembered only through the ideological conflicts of Ethiopia’s revolutionary era.Haile Fida was a prominent figure in the Ethiopian student movement in Europe and later a leading member of the All-Ethiopia Socialist Movement, widely known as MEISON. A scholar, political thinker, linguist, and revolutionary organizer, he played an influential role in debates concerning democracy, national equality, socialism, the Eritrean question, and Ethiopia’s political future.Moving between personal recollection and historical reflection, the book follows Haile’s intellectual development, friendships, political commitments, and participation in the turbulent events surrounding the 1974 Ethiopian Revolution. It examines MEISON’s policy of 'critical support' for the Derg, the growing conflicts among revolutionary organizations, and the political calculations and tragic mis-judgements that ultimately placed Haile and many of his comrades in grave danger. The author also recalls Haile’s other familiar qualities: his calm temperament, intellectual rigour, humour, love of languages, literature, art, and music, and his willingness to listen, teach, and learn from others. Memories of political debate are interwoven with recollections of everyday life, imprisonment, friendship, and Haile’s final years. This is not an attempt to present Haile Fida as a faultless political figure. Rather, it is a personal testimony that considers both his achievements and the mistakes of the movement to which he belonged. Drawing upon documentary evidence, testimonies, published sources, and the author’s own experiences, the book offers a humane portrait of a revolutionary whose life was cut short before he could explain or defend his choices.Written for Ethiopians, the diaspora, younger generations, and international readers seeking to understand Ethiopia’s revolutionary period, this memoir preserves the memory of Haile Fida while inviting continued discussion about democracy, equality, political responsibility, and the lessons of history.
