My Home in the Field of Mercy is a memoir written by Frances Wilson Huard. The book documents Huard’s experiences as a nurse during World War I, specifically her time spent in France. Huard’s narrative is rich in detail and provides a unique perspective on the war, as she was not a soldier but rather a member of the medical corps. Throughout the book, Huard describes the harsh realities of war, including the physical and emotional toll it took on both soldiers and civilians. She also writes about the camaraderie and sense of purpose she felt while serving as a nurse. My Home in the Field of Mercy is a powerful and moving account of one woman’s experiences during a tumultuous time in history.1917. Huard’s autobiography, accompanied by illustrations drawn by her husband, an official French war artist. An excerpt from the book reads: It was an exciting trip, that race for life and death-for every moment I knew my wounded boy was growing weaker, and every convulsive kick meant the disappearance of so much life blood. During the numerous adventures which befell us between the time we left Jouy-le-Chatel and our encountering the motor, my hypodermic needle had received such violent treatment that it refused service. So when we turned into Mormont at top speed, I was obliged to ask my driver to slow down and inquire for a doctor. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
