Seit 1990 konnte die Müttersterblichkeitsrate fast halbiert werden, wobei der größte Teil des Rückgangs seit 2000 nach der Einführung der Millenniums-Entwicklungsziele erfolgte. Im Jahr 2014 wurden weltweit mehr als 71 Prozent der Geburten von qualifiziertem Gesundheitspersonal begleitet, was einen Anstieg von 59 Prozent im Jahr 1990 darstellt. In den Entwicklungsregionen werden nur 56 Prozent der Geburten in ländlichen Gebieten von qualifiziertem Gesundheitspersonal begleitet, verglichen mit 87 Prozent in städtischen Gebieten. Dies bildet die Grundlage für die Interessenvertretung und Förderung qualifizierter Entbindungsdienste. Die Gesundheit von Müttern und Kindern bildet den Grundstein für die Gesundheit der Familie. Die Förderung und Bereitstellung qualifizierter Entbindungsdienste für arme und ausgegrenzte Gemeinschaften ist für die Förderung von Gesundheit und Entwicklung von großer Bedeutung. Die vierten und fünften Millenniums-Entwicklungsziele zielen darauf ab, die Kindersterblichkeit zu senken und die Gesundheit von Müttern zu verbessern. Dieses Buch enthält äußerst wichtige Informationen über die Lücken, die in Bezug auf die Gesundheit von Müttern und qualifizierte Entbindungsdienste in nomadischen Gemeinschaften festgestellt wurden.
