Life in the Scottish Highland village of Milldhu was slow and gentle and in complete harmony with nature. Nothing ever changed very much - what could, or would? It was War, and everyone knew that nothing would ever be the same again. All the young or fit were ’called up’ to fight for their Country, or they volunteered. This exodus of so many people left the ’more important’ ones exposed. For example - The very handsome husband and wife lawyers, whose wickedness drove their only daughter to try and make amends for her parents’ evil deeds. The retiring church minister surprised everyone when he courageously saved the villages reputation. The two neighbouring estate owners knew more than anyone what was going on, in secret, on many miles of moorland within their estates. Most villagers knew that it had something to do with the new gamekeeper who was, in their opinion, very strange. A few weeks into the war a little orphaned girl came to the village to live with her elderly aunt and uncle. Unknown to everyone she was of great interest to the War Department, only the gamekeeper knew why. Laced throughout is the story of love between cook and the Priest; how two much loved young men fell in love with each other; and how an Arab Prince fell in love with more than the village.
