Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939), prolífico escritor británico, fue también editor y fundador de dos innovadoras publicaciones periódicas, la English Review (1908-10) y la Transatlantic Review (1924). Conocido en el mundo literario por su novela icónica El buen soldado (1915) y la tetralogía Parade’s End (1924-8), cultivó otros géneros como la poesía, la crítica literaria, la biografía y la etnografía literaria. Su bibliografía incluye desde colaboraciones con Joseph Conrad hasta varios libros sobre su “infancia prerrafaelista”. En la actualidad es bastante desconocido en las letras hispanas y un gran olvidado en las inglesas. Asimismo, Ford fue uno de los pocos intelectuales que llevaron la vanguardia literaria francesa a la Inglaterra eduardiana, intentando mover los cimientos literarios de la narrativa estática victoriana, que tan grande había sido para las letras británicas. Mujeres y hombres, a pesar de estar inacabada, es sublime en el uso de la técnica narrativa, dejando entrever esbozos autobiográficos y pinceladas etnográficas. Entre estas, se refleja en todo momento y de modo harto sugerente el trasfondo social de la Inglaterra de principios del siglo XX, así como las relaciones humanas, especialmente las que existen entre hombres y mujeres en un periodo histórico donde el feminismo británico se abría paso en una sociedad controlada por hombres.
