Mujeres de Basatín (2010) es el retrato novelado e íntimo de un inmigrante tunecino que vuelve a su país para pasar las vacaciones de verano en el barrio de al-Basatín (Túnez capital). Durante su estancia en casa de su hermano, el protagonista se ve envuelto en una serie de encuentros y deseos reprimidos: espía a su vecina Naíma, vive una aventura con Leila, y descubre la hipocresía oculta bajo la aparente respetabilidad de su familia. El regreso a su tierra natal, lejos de ofrecerle consuelo o un sentimiento de pertenencia, le aboca y sumerge en una red de pasiones, traiciones y decepciones en las que el deseo y la culpa se extravían por las calles y cafetines del Túnez antiguo. En esta novela, como en el conjunto de su producción, Habib Selmi explora las múltiples caras de la identidad, la emigración, la memoria y las eternas tensiones entre tradición y modernidad. Mujeres de Basatín, publicada en francés bajo el título Sonríe, que estás en Túnez, ha sido asimismo traducida al alemán y al italiano. Fue finalista en 2012 del International Prize for Arabic Fiction, el más prestigioso de los premios de narrativa árabe, que concede el emirato de Abu Dabi, y es la primera obra de Habib Selmi que se publica en español.
