This book addresses the representation of the modern woman in the writings of Federica Montseny (1905-1994) in order to delve into the complex reconfiguration of female identity that the Spanish anarchist leader participated in during the interwar years of the Spanish Civil War(1923-1936). This study is the first that comprehensively interprets her novels and essays on the subject of women in light of the philosophical premises underlying the ideological edifice of anarchism, such as belief in evolution and human progress and consideration of nature as a source of beauty, virtue and eternal truth. In addition, the author examines Montseny’s fiction to highlight the elaborate intertextual dialogue with the paradigms of patriarchal culture that the writer dismantled. Nuria Cruz-Camara is Professor of Spanish at the University of Tennessee.
