A transversalidade de carácter universal, conhecida como UTM, não é propriamente uma teoria, mas sim um método de abordagem global. Mais precisamente, faz parte de um esquema de mediação humana e material em termos de tomada de decisão. A mediação corrobora certos princípios de reflexão e de aplicação prática (o modo de ação) relativos às capacidades intelectuais e criativas dos seres humanos, à luz da evolução histórica, política, económica, filosófica, social e religiosa das nossas sociedades, com o objetivo de resolver os conflitos, sejam eles civis ou militares. O autor, que tem muitos anos de experiência neste domínio e participou na criação do Fórum para a Paz no Mediterrâneo, juntamente com várias personalidades, tenta dar uma resposta modesta aos fenómenos que ligam o homem à violência.
