Mrtve duše su nedovršeni roman Nikolaja Vasiljevi_a Gogolja, remek-delo ruske književnosti. Objavljen je 1842. godine, a uz pomo_ njega je Gogolj postavio temelje u književnosti ruskog realizma. Mrtve duše su poema sastavljena od tri dela, s tim da je u drugom delu ostalo samo 5 odlomaka, a o tre_em nema nikakvog zapisa. Prvi deo romana Nikolaj je pisao skoro sedam godina u Parizu, Rimu i Švajcarskoj. Zbog psihi_ki sve nestabilnijeg stanja, spalio je drugi deo romana i nakon toga ubrzo umro. Mrtve duše predstavljaju društveni roman kroz koji je Gogolj hteo da prikaže stanje tadašnje birokratske i feudalne Rusije. Glavni lik je nekadašnji carinski službenik Pavel Ivanovi_ _i_ikov, koji je zbog toga što je sara_ivao sa švercerima, morao da napusti posao koji je radio. 3
