Il vécut vingt-six ans en Russie tzariste, et neuf ans sous le régime des Soviets. Il raconte donc ce qu’il a vu et entendu, en homme qui connaît à la perfection les gens et le pays, possédant la langue russe aussi bien, et mieux peut‑être encore, que sa langue maternelle. Nous avons conservé à son récit toute sa saveur originale, donnant plus de force encore à ses souvenirs, à la véracité de son témoignage et à l’indignation qui l’anime.
