En 1889 Emilia Pardo Bazán publicó Morriña, una novela a medio camino entre el naturalismo y el realismo, que presenta una sencilla historia con tres personajes principales: Doña Aurora, su hijo Rogelio y la nueva doncella de la casa, Esclavitud. Doña Aurora es una viuda acomodada de origen gallego que vive junto a su único hijo en una casa en Madrid en la que casi todos los días se celebra una tertulia con antiguos amigos y compañeros de su marido. Un día aparece en la casa Esclavitud, una chica joven de Galicia que sufre morriña de su tierra y que le pide a la señora formar parte de la servidumbre. Cuando doña Aurora tiene que guardar unos días de cama debido a una caída, la relación entre Rogelio y Esclavitud se vuelve más estrecha y uno de los participantes en la tertulia, al darse cuenta, advierte a la señora de esta circunstancia.
