Montanye: Or The Slavers Of Old New York is a historical novel written by William Osborn Stoddard and first published in 1901. The story is set in the early 19th century in New York City, and follows the life of a young man named Montanye who becomes involved in the illegal slave trade.Montanye is a wealthy young man who is bored with his life and looking for excitement. He becomes involved with a group of slavers who are smuggling slaves into the United States from Africa. Montanye quickly becomes enamored with the lifestyle and the money that comes with it, but soon realizes the terrible toll that the slave trade is taking on the people involved. As Montanye becomes more deeply involved in the slave trade, he begins to question his own morality and the morality of those around him. He is torn between his desire for wealth and power and his growing sense of guilt and responsibility. The novel is a powerful indictment of the slave trade and the people who profited from it. Stoddard’s vivid descriptions of life in New York City in the early 19th century are both fascinating and disturbing, and his portrayal of the characters involved in the slave trade is both nuanced and thought-provoking.Overall, Montanye: Or The Slavers Of Old New York is a gripping and thought-provoking historical novel that provides a powerful insight into the dark and disturbing world of the slave trade. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
