Celem jest ocena integralności konstrukcji i jej przydatności do użytku oraz dostarczenie wiarygodnych informacji na temat zmian reakcji konstrukcji itp. monitorowanych mostów. Jako nowe narzędzie bezpieczeństwa i zarządzania, system SHM będzie uzupełnieniem tradycyjnych metod kontroli mostów. Wdrożenie skutecznego systemu monitorowania prawdopodobnie spowoduje zmniejszenie zapotrzebowania na siłę roboczą do kontroli, wczesne wykrywanie zużycia/uszkodzeń, opracowanie optymalnego cyklu kontroli i harmonogramów napraw, zanim zużycie/uszkodzenia osiągną stan wymagający poważnych napraw.
