Książka ta przedstawia pracę dyplomową na kierunku psychologia. Zainteresowanie dziedziną onkologii rozwinęło się dzięki doświadczeniom badaczki z dziećmi hospitalizowanymi na oddziale hematologii i onkologii dziecięcej i młodzieżowej szpitala w południowej Brazylii. W okresie, w którym zajmowała się tematyką raka i jego wpływem na osoby dotknięte chorobą, a także na osoby pełniące rolę opiekunów, zetknęła się z trudnością wielu rodziców w ujawnieniu diagnozy raka dziecku. Należy zrozumieć, że istnieją różne i wyjątkowe sposoby interpretowania i rozumienia tego, co dzieje się z nami i/lub z bliską nam osobą chorą. Jednak gdy rodzina jest dobrze poinformowana, skutki choroby są mniej szkodliwe, ponieważ rodzice będą wiedzieć, jak najlepiej poradzić sobie z sytuacją, aby nie była ona tak bolesna dla dziecka. W obliczu przedstawionych kwestii diagnoza stanowi okres burzliwy, pełen obaw, sprzecznych uczuć, bólu i niepewności, dlatego zasługuje na szczególną uwagę w procesie opracowywania i nadawania znaczenia chorobie, co stanowi główny przedmiot niniejszego badania.
