Modern Chivalry is a two-volume novel written by Catherine Grace F. Gore and published in 1843. The novel is a satirical take on the romantic chivalric tradition, particularly the epic poem Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. The story follows the adventures of a young man named Harry Coverdale, who sets out to become a knight and win the heart of his lady love. Along the way, he encounters a cast of eccentric characters, including a mad scientist, a group of social climbers, and a scheming politician. Through Harry’s misadventures, Gore skewers the societal norms and expectations of the Victorian era, exposing the hypocrisy and absurdity of the upper classes.
