A modelação matemática do sistema de controlo respiratório humano é descrita por equações diferenciais de primeira ordem que descrevem a dinâmica do mecanismo de troca de gases entre o compartimento pulmonar, o compartimento dos tecidos e o compartimento do cérebro. Este modelo simula as respostas dinâmicas do transporte de oxigénio e dióxido de carbono e outros processos metabólicos de vários tecidos e outros sistemas de órgãos dentro do corpo, tanto em condições normais como anormais.O projeto trata da modelação e simulação do sistema de controlo respiratório utilizando o modelo quimiorreflexo de regulação respiratória, em que a taxa de ventilação é regulada pelas pressões parciais de dióxido de carbono arterial (PaCO2) e de oxigénio arterial (PaO2), bem como pela pressão parcial de dióxido de carbono no cérebro (PbCO2). O principal objetivo do sistema de controlo respiratório é manter constantes os valores das pressões parciais de CO2 e O2 através da modulação do impulso ventilatório.
