Mistress Content Cradock is a historical fiction novel written by Annie Eliot Trumbull and published in 1899. The story takes place in the early 17th century in the Puritan colony of Massachusetts Bay. The protagonist, Content Cradock, is a young woman who is forced to marry a man she does not love in order to secure her family’s financial stability. The novel explores the challenges and struggles that Content faces as a woman in a patriarchal society, as well as the conflicts between different religious groups in the colony. Content’s marriage is unhappy, and she seeks solace in her friendships with other women, including a Quaker woman who is persecuted for her beliefs. As the story unfolds, Content becomes increasingly disillusioned with the strict Puritan lifestyle and begins to question her own beliefs. She is also drawn to a man who represents everything her husband is not, and must decide whether to follow her heart or remain loyal to her marriage vows. Mistress Content Cradock is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that offers a vivid portrayal of life in early colonial America. Trumbull’s writing is richly detailed and immersive, and her characters are complex and nuanced. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in historical fiction, women’s history, or the early history of the United States. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
