Mission of the Republic

This book is a biography of Zhu Guangya, a scientist of outstanding merit. Written in plain yet vivid prose, it tells the extraordinary life story of this distinguished nuclear physicist-one of the main pioneers and leaders of China’s nuclear science endeavor, a recipient of the 'Two Bombs, One Satellite' Meritorious Award, and a fellow of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The biography describes his contributions to the advancement of science in China, particularly his major role in the country’s nuclear physics and atomic energy sectors. Zhu Guangya personally participated in and witnessed the entire process of China’s nuclear weapons development-from the atomic bomb to the hydrogen bomb to the neutron bomb-from nonexistence to strength, from weakness to power. He was one of the great figures in China’s magnificent national defense science enterprise and an iconic representative of an entire era. With deep emotion, the book celebrates the lofty spirit of the older generation of scientists, represented by Zhu Guangya, who devoted themselves wholeheartedly to the nation, steadfastly upheld their beliefs, and pursued their ideals. It also stands as a majestic historical tribute to the heroic sons and daughters-and to all the dedicated strugglers-who selflessly fought for New China’s dream of national rejuvenation on the desolate expanses of the Lop Nur desert and along the banks of the Kongque River.
