Miss Fridley is inspired by a true story. Experienced by the author’s sister, this story is set against one girl’s unexpected journey into the world of beauty pageants. The story is set against the backdrop of small-town tradition and youthful uncertainty. It follows the surprisingly awkward adventures and mishaps of a young teenage girl who decides to compete in a small-town beauty pageant. What begins as a young girl’s dream to wear a crown spirals into a whirlwind of catastrophes and embarrassing moments. She has no idea what she has gotten herself into. In between stage fright, wardrobe malfunctions, and unplanned talent mishaps, the young girl finds that the pressure to be perfect is found in the world of well-rehearsed routines, questionable hairstyles, sequins, and high expectations.Through it all, the young girl discovers that confidence and humor can be found in the most unlikely places. Through each moment, both successful and embarrassing, she learns how messy and magical growing up can be.This coming-of-age story teaches about finding humor in humiliation, confidence in vulnerability, and courage in being seen. This story unwraps the humor, heartbreak, and quiet strength that can be found in an idea that many care about.
