A atenção plena foi originalmente trazida para o campo da psicologia a partir da tradição budista. No entanto, apesar do grande contributo do budismo para o desenvolvimento da atenção plena, que inclui muitas formas simples e eficazes de levar a atenção plena a muitas áreas da vida, Kabat-Zinn (2003) salienta que não há nada de intrinsecamente budista. Quando vista num contexto cultural, a procura crescente de atenção plena torna-se bem compreendida.
