Klasse-V-Kavitäten können durch Karies, Erosion, Abrasion oder Abfraktion am zervikalen Rand der bukkalen und/oder lingualen Zahnoberfläche entstehen. Aufgrund der gestiegenen ästhetischen Anforderungen werden für die ästhetische Versorgung von Klasse-V-Läsionen in der Regel Verbundkomposite verwendet. Der Hauptnachteil aller lichthärtenden Kompositmaterialien ist die Polymerisationsschrumpfung, die zu Mikroleckagen an der Grenzfläche zwischen Zahn und Restauration führt. Dies führt zu marginalen Diskrepanzen und in der Folge zu Sensibilitäten, Sekundärkaries, Pulpabeteiligung, Retentionsverlusten, die zu einer Verschiebung der Restauration führen, oder zu einem Verlust der Ästhetik aufgrund von Randverfärbungen. Da eine gewisse Mikroleckage unvermeidlich ist, besteht das restaurative Ziel bei solchen Läsionen darin, die bestmögliche Abdichtung an der Schnittstelle zwischen Zahn und Restauration zu schaffen.
