Innowacje technologiczne sprawiły, że świat stał się globalną społecznością. Poprawiło to również i zwiększyło możliwości przemieszczania się osób, towarów i kapitału przez granice międzynarodowe w odpowiedzi na globalne bodźce polityczne i społeczno-gospodarcze. Granice transnarodowe są stosunkowo bardziej otwarte dla kapitału i towarów niż dla migrantów. Istnieje jednak bogata literatura i dane dotyczące społeczno-politycznych i ekonomicznych aspektów udziału dorosłych w migracji międzynarodowej. Młodzież jest traktowana jako część swoich rodzin, dlatego istnieje bardzo niewiele publikacji poświęconych migracji młodzieży. Jednak przemieszczanie się młodych dorosłych jako niezależnych migrantów transnarodowych jest nowym trendem w migracji międzynarodowej. Niniejszy artykuł pogłębia zrozumienie migracji młodzieży z perspektywy antykolonialnej wiedzy rdzennej, aby zakłócić i podważyć istniejące podejścia oraz zapewnić bardziej przejrzystą perspektywę dla zrozumienia tego nowego trendu społecznego. Podjęto znaczącą próbę podkreślenia często pomijanego skutku transnarodowej sekurytyzacji granic, która ma zarówno pozytywne, jak i negatywne konsekwencje dla krajów wysyłających i przyjmujących.
