Midnight Crossings is the result of inner and outer journeys with heartfelt expression of thoughts, feelings, and observations on many universal experiences of everyday life: joy, love, loss, dreams, fears, sorrows, and a search for understanding. The poems are grounded in memorable people and places - special places of childhood in northern Minnesota, travels during military service, chance meetings with strangers, and time spent with friends. David Person’s poetry takes readers on a mesmerizing journey from the playful wishes and dreams of youth, through the loves and mysteries of adolescence, to the adult reality and harshness of lost love and war. The simple expression of a child’s curiosity and joy, as in 'Hey, Mister' and 'Sleigh Ride,' is quickly replaced with a shadowy starkness of words and images in the reflections on love lost, as in 'Ghost' and the senselessness of war. David Person pays close attention to these life ’crossings’ - the joy of discovery, chance meetings with strangers, the value of time with family and friends, observations of nature, lost love and acceptance, changes in attitude, gathering wisdom. This sense of a journey expressed in Midnight Crossings allows readers to dive into the words with their heart and soul, stepping onto the path to be carried along or pausing a while to breathe in understanding and as the journey continues, to breathe out a collective sigh of remembrance of their own personal life events. Thoughts and impressions often revealed in the wee hours past midnight, wind down a path through the natural world and the world imagined, bringing readers from joy, to meditative thoughts in the dark of midnight, toward the light of dawn with words of hope and renewed love for life and meaningful relationships. Midnight Crossings expresses sorrow and yet growth from that sorrow, and finally, joy.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides.
