Paleontology is derived from the Greek word 'paleontos' which means 'old life'. Paleontology is the study of the history of the earth. It’s like a grandfather telling grandchildren a tale of something that once happened in the old days. In Paleontology, words are not used to illustrate. It employs fossils and organisms, however, but also entails the study of fossils in order to understand their evolution and relationships with each other. The main purposes of paleontology in petroleum exploration are to date rock layers, to correlate strata from one drilling site to another, and to reconstruct ancient environments.Paleontology, in the context of petroleum exploration, is most often employed in dating of rock layers, in correlating rocks from one drilling site to another, and in the reconstruction of ancient environments. Geologists use micro fossils to help minimize the risk of drilling and to precisely locate oil and gas fields. It is not a new issue. 200 years ago, the early geologists were faced with the same challenge, how to manage, analyze and visualize the rapidly expanding observations accumulating in the databases of the time - the world’s libraries and museums.
