Max Sauerlandt (1880-1934) war ein deutscher Kunsthistoriker und Direktor des Museums für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg. Sauerlandt verfasste über 40 Bücher zur modernen und klassischen Kunst. Sein erstmals 1911 bei Langewiesche in Düsseldorf erschienenes Werk über Michelangelo erreichte eine Auflage von über 200.000 Exemplaren. Aus dem Buch: 'Dem tiefsten Wollen der Zeit verwandt, steht Michelangelo doch von Anfang an ihrer freien Lebensäußerung beinahe fremd gegenüber. Was bei anderer Anlage explosiv nach außen hätte schlagen können, drängt sich bei ihm quälend im Innern zusammen. Den Kräften und Empfindungen seiner Leidenschaft bleibt die unmittelbare Äußerung versagt: transsubstanziiert gewinnen sie die einzige ihm mögliche Form in Werken der Kunst, die, jedes im Goethischen Sinne des Wortes eine Schöpfung der Gelegenheit, der Gelegenheit abgerungen, befreit von den Schlacken des Moments mit der Macht ewiger Aktualität wirken.'
