A novella that begins with a single cell refusing to die. A closet drama staged between a ribosome and a mitochondrion. A day in Alexandria, a conversation with an artificial intelligence, a walk through Upper Egypt, a dialogue cycle spanning six cities and two millennia. Across eight works of fiction, Hakim Ibn Adam has advanced a sustained metaphysical argument. This volume, written by their author, states it. Metaphysics in the Fiction of Hakim Ibn Adam reads the eight works in the order their commitments become available, from the collapse of reductive naturalism in a laboratory to the cessation of seeking at a lakeside boulder. Each chapter extracts the work’s governing thesis, maps its arguments onto Participatory Process Monism, and assesses them against objections the published work has already received and answered. What emerges is not a supplement to the systematic philosophy. The fiction states the framework in its own voice, enters objections against it that the reflexive volumes would only later receive, and carries arguments that appear nowhere else in the published work.

This is true of al...

  • The Grammar of Perishing
    Hakim Ibn Adam
Someone is dying in the room, and everything has been prepared except an answer. The medicine is good, the law is careful, and the words of comfort are kind. Only the question the room asks has nowhere to be received: What, exactly, is about to happen, and to whom? The modern settlement holds two doctrines about that room. The first is biological, and this book says not one wor...

    Hakim Ibn Adam
Thomas Nagel asked what it is like to be a bat-a creature whose sonar-world we cannot enter. The question exposed the limits of objective knowledge: no accumulation of facts about the bat’s neurology would tell us what echolocation feels like from the inside. The hard problem of consciousness was born. Now the question finds a new object. Not a bat. An artificial intelligence. I...
