In this book, Ru(II)-loaded amine-functionalized silica was synthesized, characterized, and its catalytic activity investigated. Throughout the work, the SiO2 surface was first functionalized with 3-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane (APTMS) at different proportions. The amine functionalization of the silica surface was confirmed using IR analysis and Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The Ru(II) arene complex [(η6-p-cymene)RuCl2]2 was synthesized and characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy. The loading of the synthesized Ru(II) arene complex on the amine-functionalized silica was done, and the ruthenium content was analyzed by the Inductively Coupled Plasma(ICP) technique. The spectroscopic and elemental analyses support the assigned structure of the catalyst. The coupling reaction between benzyl alcohol and aniline was carried out using a synthesized catalyst under solvent-free conditions. TLC and NMR analyzed the synthesized product, and the results confirmed the formation of the expected product. Thus, Ru(II)-loaded amine-functionalized silica was found to be an effective catalyst in base-catalyzed reactions and can be used for other base-catalyzed processes in the future.
