Etwa 3 % bis 5 % der weltweiten Landfläche sind mit Black Cotton Soil (BCS) bedeckt und kommen hauptsächlich im Sudan, in Südafrika, Äthiopien und Tansania vor. In Asien sind sie vor allem auf dem indischen Decca-Plateau verbreitet. Sie kommen auch in einigen Teilen Australiens, Westindiens und Russlands vor. Schwarze Baumwollböden haben unterschiedliche Farben, die von hellgrau bis dunkelgrau und schwarz reichen. Die schwarze Farbe der schwarzen Baumwollerde (BC-Erde) ist auf das Vorhandensein von Titanoxid in geringer Konzentration zurückzuführen. Der schwarze Baumwollboden (BC-Boden) hat einen hohen Anteil an Ton, der überwiegend aus Montmorillonit besteht, mit Tonsteinen, Sediment- und Restböden. Das Versagen von Fundamenten in diesen Böden ist hauptsächlich auf die unterschiedliche Bewegung des Bauwerks infolge ungleichmäßiger Bodenbewegungen aufgrund des abwechselnden Quellens und Schwindens des Bodens zurückzuführen.Dieses Lehrbuch leitet die Studenten an, die Eigenschaften von stark expansiven schwarzen Baumwollböden in Äthiopien zu testen, und stellt einige Stabilitätstechniken vor, bei denen lokal verfügbare Zutaten für die Gesellschaft verwendet werden.
