Mercurio en primavera narra la historia de una terna familiar compuesta por Julita —la madre—, Carlos y Lucas —los hijos—, habitantes todos de un pueblo conservador esgrimido a imagen y semejanza de nuestros pequeños pueblos latinoamericanos, lugar del que esos hijos buscan constantemente la forma de huir y en el que se van hundiendo en las evasiones que constituyen la voluptuosidad, el vicio y todos aquellos meandros escabrosos que los alejen de la madre, tan amada como denostada, y del pueblo como topografía de un pequeño infierno. Estamos ante una novela que se forja con el preciosismo que mejor puede describir las pequeñas educaciones sentimentales de unos seres sobrevolados por ese Mercurio del título, “el planeta, el metal, la doble cara”, ese ser que va naciendo en las páginas y que va dinamitando las convenciones, las buenas costumbres, las hipocresías de un pueblo que se ahoga en aguaceros que parecen eternos.
