Phaedrus by Plato is a dialogue between Socrates and Phaedrus in which they discuss the nature of love and rhetoric. Socrates argues that true love is not based on physical attraction but rather on the desire for wisdom and virtue. He also criticises the use of rhetoric for manipulative purposes, arguing that it should be used only for the pursuit of truth. Phaedrus, on the other hand, believes that rhetoric can be used to persuade others to do good and that love can be both physical and spiritual. Throughout their conversation, they explore these ideas in depth, with Socrates challenging Phaedrus’ beliefs and pushing him to think more deeply about his own motivations. Ultimately, they come to a deeper understanding of both love and rhetoric, recognising their power to shape our lives and relationships with others.
