Most accounts are from a Hispanic perspective, and that added an interesting dimension for me. I am Anglo and was born in the Appalachian Mountains. But I too remember warm wood stoves and cold outhouses. I hid my lunch of biscuits from my more affluent classmates, similar to one child’s memory of concealing tortillas. All the accounts detail our shared humanity--our dreams and aspirations, our love of family, our hardships. I now feel more connected to my new home, and I thank you for that.
