Escrita en árabe hacia 1637, combinando autobiografía con crónica de viajes, esta obra de indudable valor histórico y cultural relata, con un rigor no exento de humor, vivencias de un autor polifacético, cuya trayectoria no es la de un morisco cualquiera. Anticipando el destierro de los moriscos en 1609, Afocay al-?ayarí, alias Diego Bejarano, sale de España clandestinamente hacia 1599 y se exilia en Marruecos, país en el que pasa casi cuarenta años, ejerciendo de secretario intérprete para tres sultanes, antes de acabar sus días en Túnez. Atento en todo momento a la causa de su comunidad en el exilio, el autor narra sus andanzas por España, Mazagán, Marruecos, Francia, Flandes, Egipto, Meca, Túnez, etc., reproduciendo escenas de fe, aventura, romance y milagro en las que se ve involucrado y que son intercaladas por anécdotas curiosas, testimonios impactantes y reflexiones apasionantes sobre temas variados, desde la cristianización, persecución y posterior destierro de los andalusíes o la repercusión del fenómeno de los libros plúmbeos en Granada hasta la posición geopolítica de España en el mundo, la situación política y social en Marruecos y el Magreb, la vida en países como Flandes y Francia o el papel del imperio otomano en la cuenca del Mediterráneo, pasando por contactos mantenidos con grandes ulemas, altas autoridades en Flandes y Francia o los primeros orientalistas holandeses y franceses y disputas teológicas habidas con interlocutores cristianos y judíos.
