Os saxões da Transilvânia vivem na Transilvânia multiétnica, hoje Roménia, há mais de 900 anos e preservaram a sua identidade cultural enquanto minoria até aos dias de hoje. Devido à enorme vaga de emigração, em que cerca de 90% da comunidade deixou o país desde os anos 40 - especialmente entre 1990 e 1992 - coloca-se a questão de saber como é que a sua identidade é preservada. O estudo de caso qualitativo examina este fenómeno, em particular o papel das memórias. Através de entrevistas narrativas, os participantes descreveram as suas histórias de vida, que foram analisadas através da análise da teoria fundamentada. Os resultados mostram estratégias para preservar a identidade individual e colectiva dos saxões da Transilvânia. O contexto histórico e conceitos relevantes como nacionalismo, identidade, memória, multietnicidade e cultura material são também examinados. Motivado pessoalmente por raízes familiares e uma ligação à comunidade, o trabalho pretende enriquecer o campo interdisciplinar de investigação sobre a Transilvânia e os Saxões da Transilvânia e reavivar as memórias dos Saxões da Transilvânia.
