Questo lavoro ha lo scopo di discutere gli inquinanti che non vengono rimossi in modo efficiente dal trattamento convenzionale dell’acqua e, quindi, di cercare forme di trattamento alternative, valutandone i vantaggi e gli svantaggi. Questo perché l’acqua è vitale per il mantenimento della vita sulla Terra e, a seconda del suo utilizzo, è richiesto un certo standard di qualità, che può variare a seconda della legislazione del paese o del luogo. Inoltre, alcuni contaminanti possono essere pericolosi sia per l’ambiente che per la salute umana. Pertanto, quando il trattamento non è efficace, è necessario ricorrere ad altre forme di trattamento. Il metodo più convenzionale è il carbone attivo, tuttavia la sua rigenerazione è bassa e il costo elevato. Pertanto, le membrane si presentano come un’alternativa più efficace. Quelle di nanofiltrazione sono altamente selettive e già commercializzate, mentre quelle di adsorbimento, ancora in fase di ricerca, hanno un basso costo, sono facili da produrre, la loro materia prima è abbondante, sono efficienti e hanno una buona rigenerazione.
