Dieser Aufsatz ist eine Einladung an den Leser, die Erzählungen des Pentateuch auf eine neue Weise zu betrachten. Es stimmt, dass die Tora der heilige Text des Judentums und die Grundlage des jüdischen Glaubens ist. Bevor sie jedoch kanonisiert' wurde, war sie eine Sammlung verschiedener Texte, die dazu dienten, dem entstehenden Judentum während der persischen und hellenistischen Periode (etwa zwischen dem 6. und 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr.) eine eigene Identität zu geben. In diesem Sinne haben sie mit der biblischen 'Geschichtsschreibung' (d. h. der Geschichtsschreibung) zu tun. Wir werden sie jedoch nicht als historische 'Quellen' betrachten, sondern als literarische Texte mit historischem Wert, da sie zur Bildung eines 'kollektiven Gedächtnisses' des Judentums beitragen. Und genau darum geht es unserer Meinung nach: um ein kollektives Gedächtnis.
