O Protocolo de Controlo de Transmissão (TCP) foi concebido para fornecer dados fiáveis de ponta a ponta em redes não fiáveis. Na prática, a maioria das implementações do TCP foi cuidadosamente concebida no contexto das redes com fios. Ignorar as propriedades das redes Ad Hoc sem fios pode levar a implementações do TCP com fraco desempenho. Nas redes Ad Hoc, as perdas nem sempre se devem ao congestionamento da rede, como acontece maioritariamente nas redes com fios. O desempenho do TCP degrada-se devido ao desempenho das camadas inferiores nessas redes não fiáveis. As redes ad hoc multihop que adoptam a camada MAC da norma IEEE 802.11 sofrem de contenção e do problema do nó oculto. Além disso, a grande variação do atraso de contenção resulta numa grande variação do tempo de ida e volta que afecta o desempenho do TCP. Por isso, é necessário concentrar-se no efeito dos factores de contenção e interferência no desempenho da rede.
