Les tissus gingivaux sont exposés à une grande variété de facteurs environnementaux défavorables dans la cavité buccale. Lors de la mastication des aliments, le bol alimentaire passe avec force sur la surface gingivale. La gencive est également exposée à des variations extrêmes de température et de pH. Plus de 300 espèces bactériennes, dont certaines sont pathogènes, ont été reconnues comme commensales de la cavité buccale. Malgré toutes ces conditions environnementales défavorables, les tissus parodontaux restent normalement en bonne santé. Cela est dû au système de défense de l’hôte qui trouve un équilibre avec ces adversités. La défense de l’hôte est établie à différents niveaux.
