Ce travail étudie une classe prometteuse et peu coûteuse de matériaux solaires appelés pérovskites hybrides organiques-inorganiques. Au cours de la dernière décennie, ces matériaux ont vu leur efficacité solaire passer d’environ 4 % à près de 27 %. À l’aide de simulations informatiques avancées, l’auteur examine un matériau pérovskite courant, le FAPbI₃, et des composés apparentés dans lesquels certains atomes d’iode sont remplacés par du brome. L’étude montre que les modifications de la structure cristalline ou de la composition chimique influent sur la manière dont le matériau absorbe la lumière du soleil et sur la facilité avec laquelle les charges électriques se déplacent à l’intérieur du matériau. Certains changements modifient la couleur de la lumière absorbée et influencent la force avec laquelle les électrons et les trous restent ensemble, ce qui est important pour la performance des cellules solaires. Ces résultats expliquent comment les scientifiques peuvent ajuster la composition et la structure de ces matériaux pour concevoir des cellules solaires moins chères, plus efficaces et plus fiables à l’avenir.
