Wurzelendfüllungen sind in der periradikulären (apikalen) Chirurgie, insbesondere bei der Wurzelspitzenresektion, von entscheidender Bedeutung, um den Hohlraum an der resezierten Zahnspitze abzudichten. Ihre Hauptfunktion besteht darin, ein Mikroleck von Bakterien, Toxinen und Flüssigkeiten zwischen dem Wurzelkanal und dem umgebenden Gewebe zu verhindern und so eine erfolgreiche Heilung zu gewährleisten. Im Laufe der Zeit wurden Materialien wie Amalgam, Glasionomerzement, Kompositharze und Mineraltrioxidaggregat (MTA) verwendet. Derzeit gelten biokeramische Materialien wie MTA und Biodentine aufgrund ihrer überlegenen Biokompatibilität, Versiegelungsfähigkeit und regenerativen Eigenschaften als Goldstandard. Traditionelle Materialien wie IRM, Super EBA und Amalgam werden aufgrund ihrer schlechteren biologischen und abdichtenden Eigenschaften weniger bevorzugt. Die Wahl des geeigneten Materials hängt von Faktoren wie Verarbeitungseigenschaften, Abbindezeit, Biokompatibilität und klinischer Situation ab. Die fortschreitende Entwicklung von Biokeramiken bietet vielversprechende Verbesserungen für die Ergebnisse der apikalen Chirurgie. Daher werden in diesem Buch verschiedene Wurzelfüllungsmaterialien vorgestellt.
