El 21 de septiembre de 1976, una autobomba en la capital de Estados Unidos asesinó al excanciller de Salvador Allende, Orlando Letelier, y a su colaboradora, la estadounidense Ronni Moffitt. El atentado causó impacto mundial, pues ocurrió a catorce cuadras de la Casa Blanca y acabó con la vida de uno de los opositores más activos a la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet. En un tranquilo barrio de embajadas y parques, Letelier y Moffitt murieron desangrados, ante la consternación de policías y transeúntes.Las sospechas de ambas familias fueron confirmadas por la investigación del FBI: el crimen había sido obra del régimen chileno, a quien Estados Unidos consideraba un aliado.El proceso para encarcelar a los responsables abarcó casi dos décadas y abrió una herida en las relaciones bilaterales. Pese a todo, la justicia nunca alcanzó a quien dio personalmente la orden: el general Augusto Pinochet, quien había sido subalterno de Letelier hasta el golpe de 1973. Pinochet falleció en 2006, sin reconocer ni este ni otros crímenes, ni haber sido condenado por delito alguno.Basándose en los testimonios de decenas de protagonistas y testigos en ambos países, además de cartas y archivos personales, el expediente del caso y cientos de documentos secretos desclasificados por Estados Unidos, este libro responde las últimas dudas sobre uno de los actos más crueles y audaces de la dictadura chilena. No sólo reconstruye el doble crimen y la larga búsqueda por lograr la justicia. Gracias a documentos de la CIA sobre el caso, los últimos de los cuales salieron a la luz en 2016, su autor entrega las pruebas definitivas contra Pinochet, como cerebro del único atentado en suelo estadounidense perpetrado por otro país en la historia.
