Ce livre s’attache à démontrer le retour du tragique sous une forme moderne au sein de la littérature contemporaine et à mettre en évidence sa manifestation dans les deux œuvres de Marguerite Duras : Moderato Cantabile et L’Amant. Il distingue les différents visages de la tragédie au fil des siècles, et met l’accent sur les notions fondamentales de celle-ci sous une nouvelle couleur plus adaptée à l’époque moderne. Le livre présent, tout en s’appuyant sur des non-sens, des non-valeurs et des absences de la vie des êtres-humains, représente une nouvelle phase de la fatalité moderne qui envahit la vie d’homme et entraîne son désarroi. Il vise à soulever les problèmes primordiaux et existentiels de l’être humain, et à refléter la perception sombre de l’existence humaine qui s’étend à l’œuvre entière de cette romancière et lui donne une tonalité tragique.
