El budismo actual es todavía poco conocido en Occidente. Sólo el budismo tibetano, que no es más que una rama entre otras, tiene el viento a su favor en Occidente, aunque tenga poco más que ver con el budismo que el nombre. La esencia del budismo, de su enseñanza, sigue siendo en realidad poco conocida en todo el mundo. Incluso los conceptos centrales y fundamentales se comprenden tan mal que muchos practicantes que se declaran budistas niegan su propia existencia. Por eso no es de extrañar que tantos malentendidos, tantos equívocos, tantas ilusiones encubran el verdadero sentido de la enseñanza, del Dharma, aunque el budismo tibetano, popularizado en Occidente gracias a la figura tan publicitada de su líder espiritual, el Dalai Lama, encuentre allí un cierto número de adeptos.Se han creado muchos conceptos para tratar de explicar las palabras de Buda, y no faltan glosas de los sutras. Pero los sutras son difíciles de penetrar, de interpretar, por lo que los errores de lectura son muy frecuentes. El propósito de este libro es precisamente arrojar algo de luz sobre el significado del budismo, aclarar algunos de sus conceptos, su propósito, los medios para acceder a él y diversos conceptos erróneos que se han difundido sobre él a lo largo de la historia.
