Major Barbara Undershaft has devoted herself to saving souls and fighting poverty through her work with the Salvation Army. Her estranged father, Andrew Undershaft, has built an immense fortune manufacturing weapons. To Barbara, his wealth represents everything her faith should oppose. To Undershaft, poverty-not money-is the greatest evil, and good intentions mean little without the power to change material conditions. When the Salvation Army accepts large donations from a whisky distiller and from Undershaft himself, Barbara’s moral certainty is shaken. If charitable work depends upon money, does the source of that money matter? Can wealth created through destructive means be used for good? And what happens when uncompromising ideals encounter people whose hunger cannot wait for moral purity?First performed in 1905 and published in 1907, George Bernard Shaw’s Major Barbara turns these questions into a provocative battle of ideas. Barbara’s religious conviction confronts her father’s unapologetic philosophy of wealth and power, while the Salvation Army shelter where she works brings their arguments into contact with poverty, desperation, hypocrisy, and practical need.Yet Shaw refuses to make the conflict simple. Undershaft is an arms manufacturer, but he provides his workers with security and material comfort. Barbara dedicates herself to the poor, but the institution through which she serves them cannot operate without financial support. Charity, capitalism, religion, warfare, and social reform become entangled as each character is forced to consider the difference between moral intentions and tangible results.Filled with Shaw’s characteristic wit and argumentative energy, Major Barbara asks uncomfortable questions about the relationship between money and morality. Is poverty itself a moral evil? Does accepting compromised money compromise the good accomplished with it? Can spiritual salvation matter without material security? And who possesses greater power to transform society-the idealist who condemns injustice or the industrialist with the resources to reshape people’s lives?More than a century after its first performance, Major Barbara remains a sharp and surprisingly modern debate about faith, poverty, wealth, power, and the price of doing good. Shaw offers no comfortable division between heroes and villains. Instead, he forces competing ideals into collision and leaves readers to confront the unsettling possibility that doing good in an imperfect world may require choices that moral certainty alone cannot resolve.
