In the Classic period, Teotihuacan (central Mexico) was the largest city in the New World. Like any major centre it drew migrants from a wide area. Although most of these were quickly absorbed, one group of Zapotec immigrants from the Valley of Oaxaca maintained their distinct identity through five centuries of residence in the Tlailotlacan community, on the edge of the city. The excavation of TL6, a multi-family residence in the barrio, allowed the tracing of one social group from their initial settlement to the final abandonment of the barrio. Eight architectural stages are defined and a number of tombs, burials and ritual deposits are tied to each stage. Zapotec practices and ceramics manufactured locally but in Zapotec styles occur throughout the sequence. The scope of investigation later widens to the barrio as a whole, with discussion of the initial migration, economic pursuits, social practices, the mortuary programme, age categories, and gender. 6
